Quick Answer

Training a dog seems simple but expectations can be high. Focus on progress not perfection - celebrate the small wins with your dog.

Training a dog seems really simple doesn't it? You tell the dog what to do and the dog does it, right? Unfortunately, it's not always that easy, and our expectations can sometimes be set a little too high.

The 3 Ps: Patience, Persistence, Practice

When it comes to training your dog, the three Ps are your best friends. Patience, Persistence, and Practice are the foundations of successful dog training.

Patience

Dogs need time to learn, just like humans do. They won't understand a new cue the first time you show them. It takes repetition, consistency, and a calm approach to help your dog understand what you're asking of them.

Persistence

Don't give up! Some days will be better than others. Your dog might nail a behaviour one day and seem to have forgotten it the next. This is completely normal and part of the learning process.

Practice

Short, frequent training sessions are far more effective than long, drawn-out ones. Aim for 5-10 minute sessions several times a day rather than one long session.

Celebrate the Small Wins

Did your dog make eye contact with you when you said their name? That's a win! Did they put two paws on the mat instead of four? That's progress! Every small step forward is worth celebrating.

Remember, your dog is trying their best. They want to please you, and with the right approach, you'll both enjoy the training journey together.
